Hocking Hills 60k – September 2010

September 2010

This past month I decided to up the fun factor and take on the Hocking Hills 60k (37.28 miles). The race consisted of three 20k loops that roughly consisted of about 33% asphalt, 33% old logging roads, and 33% trails. It was a beautiful, cool fall morning when we headed out at 7a, and I tucked in behind the lead pack for much of the first loop. I got into a decent rhythm, although my legs never felt particularly strong and I didn’t notice the temperature increasing throughout the morning. By the end of the second loop, around 25 miles, I was overheated and nothing felt quite right. Somehow I convinced myself it was still a good idea to go the last 12+ miles. Even though I slowed considerably because of the heat and some leg cramps, I found a way to keep moving. I finished in 6:13, a bit slower than planned, but I held onto 5th place overall.

Next up is a 50 mile race in November. I’m already questioning my own sanity for signing up for that one…
